Shaldon Optimists

Rich and Si opening the batting

We got off to a fairly good start, although Si looked like he was trying to hit the ball out of the park a tad too early! Just as we looked like we were going to start hitting out, though, I played my Shaldon Shot – an ugly sweep across the line that I edge for a catch. I did it in my first game and I did it again in my 53rd. Chip was out shortly afterwards caught and bowled, but Aaron came in and he and Si got the innings moving along a bit and we were close to 50 by the 10th over. 100 was our target and we were well on course. However Si and Aaron both departed shortly afterwards and we got in a bit of a mire, with our middle order either looking like they were playing a Test or trying to hit the ball too hard too soon. We struggled to 73 after 19 overs, before an eventful final over (Shaldon generously offered to let us bat out or overs, thus letting me have another go) saw 17 runs and a final total of 90. I scored as many runs off the four balls I faced as I did in the whole of the first five overs…
