The Pearmen

A beautiful summer’s evening and the prospect of a barbecue and World Cup football made a fantastic backdrop to the game against Worcester’s Pearmen. The Pearmen won the toss and elected to bat. Birthday boy Kev opened the bowling, but there was to be no early wicket: Kev, Dion, Chip, Chris and Si had all had a bowl, and the score was approaching 100 before the breakthrough came. Barry Goldsmith, playing his first game for the Cavaliers, induced a top-edge; the ball hung in the air for a while before I somehow managed to avoid dropping it. Thompson and Bailles, looking comfortable against everything we could throw at him, upped the rate somewhat, and despite our best efforts only one more wicket fell. Chalky did his best to drop a thin edge off James’s bowling, but held it at what looked like the ninth attempt. At the end of their 20 overs, The Pearmen had scored 167-2 with Bailles unbeaten on 85.

Our response didn’t get off to the best start as I was dismissed for a third-ball duck. Sam, on his first appearance of the season, and Chalky put on a good 30 together before both fell in the sixth over, then Chris’s calamitous run-out and Si’s mistimed pull in the seventh and eighth left us in real trouble at 34-5. Pete was bowled shortly afterwards, bringing Dion and Chip together in the middle.

Both played sensibly but made the most of their scoring opportunities, Chip cracking one blinding six back over the bowler’s head on his way to a best-ever 27 not out, while Dion found the gaps well in making 18, also unbeaten. The Cavaliers finished on 83-6, a very good effort.

By now, the barbecue was in full swing with Edric putting in a man-of-the-match performance over the coals, James and Chip had the TV rigged up for the football, and a whole bunch of friends and family turned up to celebrate with Kev. A great game and a fantastic evening, then, and not even the England football team could entirely ruin it.
