Woodbury

Our visit to Woodbury was one of the most one-sided games we’ve played so far, with a couple of the Woodbury players playing so well as to almost win the game single-handedly. If two of you can win the game single-handedly, anyway.

Anyhoo.

We lost the toss once again and were put in to bat, which in retrospect was definitely a good thing. We wasted no time in losing our first wicket, Chalky and I running a couple of byes before the first ball I hit went straight to a fielder. Chalky and Dion moved the score on to 17 before Chalky was bowled by Rohani – the first of his four wickets. Meds then got a shocker of an lbw decision from the skip just as it looked like he and Dion were steadying the ship, and last-minute stand-in Jake was out shortly afterwards for two. Dion was bowled four balls later for 25, having scored two-thirds of our 41 runs (for five wickets) at that stage. Chip carefully played himself in then got out for a duck, and we had all sorts of problems.

Fortunately Si was in the mood to play occasional defensive shots, and rode his luck on lbw decisions as the score crept up. Woodbury felt somewhat aggrieved when Si actually kicked the ball away from in front of his stumps, but as the bowler was directly in front of the ump at the time he survived. Somehow we crept up to 104 all out – a remarkable effort really – with Rohani taking four of the wickets.

There was still time before tea, and Olesky and Jarmin set about us. Si had one of the openers caught behind by tea, but by then the game was over. At tea, Woodbury were 70-1 after 12 overs, and Jonathan Mark had broken his finger attempting a catch. It felt like a pretty hard session.

Jarman went on to score 63 from just 38 balls before Dion bowled a great yorker to send his off-stump flying. By then it was almost over anyway, and Plowman and Jarvis saw the game out for a deserved Woodbury win.

This left plenty of time for a few beers in the sunshine on one of the warmest days of the year so far.
